Natalie Wood
Gilmore Girls is a show filled with idiosyncratic characters, and one is the glamour stylist and fashion guru Miss Celine. She's only appeared on a few eppies, her latest during season five. But what's most interesting is her face-star match. Once she has labelled you as a certain star, you remain that star. In Lorelai's case Miss Celine took one glance at her and saw only Natalie Wood. Natalie Wood is a 1940 to 1980 actress whose played in many films. She has an eccentric giddy-up with a feverish style. It's no wonder Miss Celine pegged Lorelai as a Nat.
The reason for this post is because I had no idea who Natalie Wood was, and I was to lazy to look her up (that or I forgot). But the other night at twelve am on the Turner Classic Movies channel, a Natalie Wood film called Penelope flashed across my screen. I didn't know what to expect, I just made the Gilmore Girls connection and decided to watch. It was...surprise...a good film. It had an air of Alias with Natalie jumping into multiple aliases, two bank robberies and secret feelings of love all around. But what really made the movie fun was Penelope being a kleptomaniac. Natalie Wood's Penelope is a great look into a Gilmore Girls reference as well as a great old movie. I highly recommend this film.
Now. Did you get the Natalie Wood reference? Or were you like me, having it slip over your head? Have you seen any Natalie Wood films? Which ones? Do you think she's a good actress? Is she a great Lorelai comparison or not?

I've been fortunate enough to have caught several of Natalie Wood's performances. My favorite, of course, West Side Story (as Maria). My other favorites that she played in were Splendor in the Grass, Gypsy, and her first Academy nomination in Rebel Without a Cause.
Lorelai does channel a lot of Natalie from the sexy yet conservative look to the witty repertoire she has with people around her.
Whether or not Lorelai is being paralleled to Natalie (which I really don't think, honestly, since in reality Natalie Wood was almost as notorious as Elizabeth Taylor in the men's department... bedhopping and whatnot), it's nice to know that at least the characters Natalie played are those Lorelai can relate to. Honestly, almost any girl can relate to NW's characters at one point in life. I think that's what's missing in today's actors and movies.

I have to agree, even though I'v only seen one of Nat Wood's movies. She brings so much life to a character just as Lorelai does. Nowadays, most actors and movies can't pinpoint a single note of drama and reality. It's sad really. Because if more films where like the old days, maybe movies would be worth it.

I've never seen any of Natalie Wood's films. I hope that you all are not throwinig tomatoes at me now, but I'm not really into television much. Yes, I watch the occassionally Sopranos and Gilmore Girls, but other than that I'm tapped out. I'm more into outdoor stuff. It's weird, too, because I've heard of the movies donut shop mentioned, I'm just not the couch person. I guess I have some renting to do.

LOL the only reason why I've watched all these movies is because I have worked with a lot of old people. It doesn't help that I've also taken theatre and had to watch a lot of old flicks.
God, I sound like such a loser geek...

I don't suppose it makes you a geek. I mean if that's true then I would be and I usually picture geeks on video games and cyberspace. LOL!
