Sweet Emily and Richard

I was surprised as any of you, when Emily told Lorelai that she and Richard had been looking for a house to buy for Luke and Lorelai. During there whole Stars Hollow house hunting, never did it cross my mind that Emily and Richard were planning to buy a house not for them. The Gilmore writers did a good job of hiding the endeavor, and I want to pay tribute. I don't think that I've ever been surprised on Emily and Richard's end, and I must say that I didn't hate or dislike it. It was a good thing; it was a wonderful thing, actually. And the fact that it made Lorelai finally crack under the whole crappy thing with Luke was just an added bonus. Who would have thougth that Emily would have been the one to suck Lorelai out of her funk? Not I. I mean she wasn't able to do it at the dinner before, so what made her do it now? My money's own the surprise. People always react differently when their overwhelmed, and Lorelai was surely overwhelmed by this act of kindness. So I would have to believe that Lorelai caved from her normal emotional stance that she has with her parents to tell her mom about her worries because of the surprise. It was just so sweet, and out of character for both. But I think sweet Emily and Richard fits for this occassion.

What do you think? Were you just as surprised as I was? Or did you expect it? Come on, lets discuss. Did you really think that Emily and Richard would leave their expensive house for a mid-grade in some out of the way town?

The whole time I thought that Richard and Emily were looking for them a place, and the whole time I was thinking: what in the h*** are the writers doing with these characters? They can't move Emily and Richard to Stars Hollow. It's just not right, for the show and for the characters. And then booom! The house hunting was all in the name of parental love and acceptance. That was a surprise, like you said Rudy. But I don't know how I feel about it yet. The writers always through in some sort of twist that messes up the sweet Emily and Richard moment the minute you start to like them.

I actually felt like it might have been good for the show to move the Gilmores closer to their family. It'd making things interesting that's for sure.

Oh, no. No! That would change too many characters; the show has already changed so many. They don't need to change anymore for the moment.

I figured that it was supposed to be a gift since there was a lot of, "Oh, you remodeled the place" was all Emily said when she realized that Luke and Lorelai spruced up the Crapshack. I don't think the elder Gilmores would've moved either since they belong to the Hartford circle. Leaving it would've put them in the midst of rumorville.

Hmmm, I never caught the lack of criticizm from Emily, which is probably why I didn't see it coming.

I was shocked when Emily told Lor that she and Richard bought her and Luke a house. How out of character for Emily! I think that it was a really sweet gesture though. I think that Emily is FINALLY 100% accepting Luke and Lorelai's relationship. I didn't like that Lorelai said "we're not getting married" (or whatever the line was). That just about ruined the whole scene for me. What are the writer's doing? Putting us through misery, that's for sure. I am anxiously waiting to see tomorrow night's Season Finale! Will Luke and Lorelai elope (I almost hope so so we won't have to wait until next season to see them married). Anyway, that's just my thoughts.

See, now I really loved that it was Emily that Lorelai finally let it all out to. I felt like it was really a great way to end that scene, because the whole last half of the season seems to have been leading up to what the season finale is all about. Lorelai has been living in denial land for far too long, doing what she and Rory do best, deny what they feel and what is happening, hoping that everything will be okay and work out on its own like magic.

And that moment, especially with the day that Lorelai and Emily had, to have it end on such a wonderful/heartbreaking note was so them. They have such a crazy relationship with each other. Both of them want to be close, they want to be loved by the other, but they both manage to screw it up. So for Emily to finally give her approval for Lorelai to marry the man she loves (who, unfortunately, currently has his head so far up his ass he can't see that he's killing the woman he claims to adore) and for Lorelai to finally give her mother a real emotion that isn't shrouded in sarcasm and witty remarks was a huge thing for me. Especially since I am not really a fan of the way that this season has been played out. Even Passions of DoOL would be screaming at ASP for her up and down, in and out, continuity error ridden final 22 episodes of the series.

I agree. I think it was the best emotional mother/daughter moment for Lorelai and Emily. Usually, when Lor has a moment with Emily, Emily ends up make a remark, like "now we can discuss what in the world you thinking."
